Wall Overview

Retaining Wall Installation Built For Real Slope, Soil, and Drainage

A retaining wall is equal parts engineering and craft. Done right, it holds back tons of soil through every storm and freeze, manages drainage so water doesn't blow it apart, and looks like it's always been part of the property. Done wrong, you'll watch it lean, bow, and crack within a few years — and there's no cosmetic fix for a failing wall. We design and build segmental retaining walls and landscape walls in Wentzville and across St. Charles County: garden walls, tiered terraces, driveway walls, and erosion-control walls built with proper base trenching, drainage stone, geogrid reinforcement where the height demands it, and code-aware engineering on anything over four feet.

What's Included
  • On-site slope, soil, and drainage assessment
  • Wall layout, height calculation, and block system spec
  • Excavated and compacted base trench with aggregate leveling pad
  • Premium segmental wall block (Belgard, Pavestone, Versa-Lok)
  • Drainage stone and perforated drain pipe behind the wall
  • Geogrid reinforcement layers where required by height or load
  • Engineered plans and permit coordination on walls over 4 feet
  • Backfill, cap stones, and a clean site at hand-off

Why Proper Retaining Wall Construction Is Non-Negotiable

Retaining walls fail for the same reasons every time: no leveling pad at the base, no drainage behind the wall, no geogrid in the backfill, and no consideration for the soil load above. Soil is heavy — a wall five feet tall is holding back many tons of pressure, and that pressure increases dramatically when the backfill saturates after heavy rain. If water can't escape through proper drainage stone and a drain pipe, hydrostatic pressure pushes the wall forward until it bows, leans, or topples.

There's also a code dimension most homeowners don't realize. In most St. Charles County jurisdictions, retaining walls over four feet tall (measured from the bottom of the base to the top of the wall) require engineered plans and permits. We handle that process — sizing the wall, specifying the right block system, designing the geogrid layout, and coordinating any required engineering stamps. Smaller garden walls, terraces, and bed-edging walls don't need permits, but we still build them with the same drainage and base standards so they perform for decades, not seasons.

Why Our Walls Last

Walls That Don't Bow, Don't Lean, Don't Fail.

Engineered For The Long Haul

Proper base trench, drainage stone, drain pipe, and geogrid — the parts that decide whether a wall lasts.

Erosion Control That Works

Walls that actually solve runoff and slope problems — not just hide them temporarily.

Drainage By Design

Every wall includes a drainage system behind it — because water is what kills cheap walls.

Geogrid Where Required

Reinforced backfill layers on taller walls so the wall and the soil behind it act as one mass.

Code-Aware & Permitted

Walls over 4 feet are engineered and permitted as required by local code — we handle the paperwork.

Looks Like It Belongs

Block colors and cap details that match your home and landscape, not generic gray stacks.

Wall Build Process

From Slope Assessment To Cap Stone.

01

Site Assessment & Spec

We evaluate the slope, soil, drainage conditions, and intended use — then spec the right wall system and height.

02

Design, Quote & Permits

Detailed scope and clear pricing. For walls over 4 feet, we coordinate engineering and permit submittal.

03

Excavate, Base & Build

Trench excavated, leveling pad compacted, block laid course by course with drainage stone and geogrid in proper sequence.

04

Backfill, Cap & Clean-Up

Backfill placed and compacted in lifts, cap stones glued, and the site left clean and graded.

Why Choose Mow Bros As Your Retaining Wall Contractor

We're an owner-led, locally based crew that doesn't subcontract wall work. We spec each wall to the site — slope, soil type, height, drainage — and use proven segmental block systems (Belgard, Pavestone, Versa-Lok) rated for the conditions. You'll get a written scope before the build, clear pricing, and an honest answer if a wall would be better re-built than repaired.

We frequently combine retaining walls with paver patios, steps, and landscape design when a backyard renovation calls for both. If you're not sure what you need, the fastest start is a free on-site assessment via the quote form or our contact page.
